Karla caves

After completing Lohgad trek, we were in fix. Next day we wanted to visit some place and there are plenty of options near Lonavala. But we chose Karla caves.

Karla caves are 6-7 km from Malvali. We decided to take walk rather than taking auto. We met one elderly gentleman on the way. He was from Mumbai and his destination was Ekvira mandir near the cave. We discussed lot of things from Bengaluru to Mumbai. He was basically from Mangalore but settled in Mumbai. He gave a lot of tips on Mumbai trip. We climbed the steps to reach top where we found cave adjacent to temple.

Karla caves dates back to the 2nd century BC to 5th century AD. It belongs to Hinayana style of architecture. You find it more beautiful than Baje caves when comes to sculptures.

What I like about this cave is the carvings on entrance of the chaitya gruha. Buddha's statue on top of the elephant is the most beautiful creation. Then the pillars inside the caves are beautiful.

Then we went to Ekvira temple, which dates back to Mahabharata period. According to mythology , Pandavas constructed this temple. It was very peaceful. You find different varieties of tasty sweets near the steps. Due to lack of time we skipped many sweets and decided to take auto near the steps.
Karla cave visit was a good experience because of the beautiful location and the carvings.
