Gavi - Being close to Nature

I was going through a post on the reason for Kerala floods. Last month, Kerala and Coorg had met with one of the worst tragedy which led to many deaths. The deforestation and the improper management of dam water have led to this which made more than lakhs of people to displace. It would take some time to bring back the normalcy in this region. Whatever the help which came from all the corners is appreciable, but we need to concentrate on avoiding such floods. For that, we need to conserve our forests and wildlife. It is all related to ecological balance.

I have been to Kerala many times. Each and every time I visited this place, I have come back with different experiences. Whatever happened to Kerala has hurt me a lot. Then I have also seen some hatred posts about Kerala. Let us ignore such kind of people. Here I have written one of my experiences about Kerala. I want to dedicate this to all those affected by floods in Kerala and Coorg.

Many of my travel buddies feel that we could travel to Kerala whole year. It has beaches, temples, forests, hills, waterfalls and beautiful culture. The unity of the state is also one of the highlights of the state.

Most of the people prefer Munnar over all other places in Kerala, but Gavi has been an alternative for Munnar. Gavi is part of the Periyar tiger reserve forest which came to limelight after one of the Malayalam movies. Thekkady is also famous for Periyar National Park.

Gavi was in our bucket list since long back.  Finally, I planned for this beautiful place after marriage. We were 7 people who decided to visit Periyar National park. We had booked on some website. Our first visit was Thekkady boating inside the national park. This is the first time I could see different varieties of birds and animals while boating. A herd of elephants was clearly visible. The submerged trees were house to many birds. Darter or snake birds are very much common here.

Thekkady is also house to many sambar deer. We could see those animals but they were too far.

The boat ride in the Thekkady lake is a must-do activity here. After that, we moved to Gavi and got the tented cottage in the forest.

After having lunch we had a small trek accompanied by the gunmen for our safety. The forest has many tiger, bisan and other animals. We saw bisan and deers. 3 years back there was an incident 2 people died due to animal attacks. That's the reason there is enough security to safeguard the tourists.

The next day we had gone for safari which is of no use. Not even a single animal was seen. But we visited the dam and the place where we can take a boat to waterfalls. Our main plan was to visit the waterfalls but ended up with this package. There is a separate package for this. If you are planning for Gavi ask for the waterfall package because that is the most beautiful part of Gavi.

Trekking in Gavi

Gavi is very scenic and had rich flora and fauna. You can see the different varieties of birds if you observe carefully. People from different parts of the world visit this place. We met two people from Dubai who stayed near our tent.

Trekking in Gavi was one of the highlights of our trip. A forest guard accompanied us since there are chances of wild animals encounter. We saw wild bison on the way to the peak.  The rain and the green surrounding made this trek more beautiful. You must be a good observer to explore different kinds of birds. It's a heaven for the photographers.

The food was good with different kinds of options. For vegetarians, different kinds of vegetable curry were there. For non-vegetarians, Kerala is heaven. Different kinds of fish were there.

Kerala has been one of my fav solo travel places. It is one of the safest places to travel in India. Having said that it is also our responsibility to make awareness about the reasons for natural calamities.

As I said, Kerala will take a few months to recover from the flood. But we need to be serious about the deforestation happening in Kerala and other western ghats region.  Coorg has been a famous spot for many Bangaloreans. But today we could see how devastating the effect was. And I must say this is man-made. Sometimes done by the industrialist, timber mafia, sand mafia, etc.. who are looting our natural resources. We are also equally culprit since we have not raised our voice against them.

Eco-balance is very much necessary for our existence. Travel comes with a responsibility to follow guidelines, spread awareness and educate people on the same. I have been moved by this video "Nature Speaking" by Julia Roberts. We all human beings need nature. Nature has seen much more powerful species than us. If nature is not there, we all will be finished.

Let's remember these lines.
"Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you". - Frank Lloyd Wright
