Melukote -2014

Abhi as I have mentioned in many posts, like to travel all over India. He has been wanderer and explorer. Melukote has been one of the place he never tried in his journey. So he asked me to accompany me. Our mode of transport was his bike. We needed to cover 137 km from Bangalore.

There are 2 routes. Either you can go via Ramanagara and Mandya or u can go through nelamangala, and Yadiyur. The latter covers 3 places : Yadiyur, nagamangala and melukote. But we took Mandya route.

I am not sure about the exact time we left Bangalore, but we took 3 hours to reach Melukote. In between we stopped to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Kalyani pond / Pushkarani

We were totally hungry and had some cucumber and butter  milk once we reached the temple. We roamed around the Kalyani pond /Pushkarani ,which is very famous here.

If you want to take your wife/ girl friend, this is the best place. You find it divine as well as romantic place. Best place to spend time here is in evening. We then went to Venkatramana temple near the pond. After having darshan we moved to Yoga Narasimha temple.

Yoga Narasimha temple

It is believed that this temple is built by bhakta Prahlada himself. History apart, this temple is on top of the hill. Evening is a good time for photography. But we were in a hurry and had a plan to see all important places before evening. We climbed the steps and had darshana of lord Yoganarasimha and moved to view point.

View point Behind temple

We can not call it as a view point but a clam place where you can spend your morning or evening looking at the field. If you have seen prajavani kids section, kids used to draw some fields surrounded by hills. A temple on top of the hill and a small pond or river used to be the children's imagination. This place looks like the same with the beautiful touch of innocence.

Evening point

Cheluva Narayana Swamy temple

We then moved to popular temple of Melukote. This temple is uniquely built and worshiped by both devotees of Rama and Krishna. A festival by name Vairamudi occurs annually.

Raya Gopura

After Cheluvanarayan temple, we moved to Raya Gopura. You might have seen this place in many movies including Rajanikanth's Padiyappa. Local people says that this unfinished structure has been  built in overnight.

Top view from Gopura looks good.. You can view Yoganarasimha temple from the top.

Dhanuskoti

We then moved to Dhanushkoti, the place where Rama and Sita took rest.

According to folklore,  Lord Rama shot an arrow and water came out of the rock.  People think the water is sacred and they will sprinkle a few drops of water on their head. It is also believed it never dries up.

on the way, the monuments

Akka tangi kola

One more place to visit here is akka tangi kola. Smaller than kalyani, but beautiful and old temple beside that adds spice to the scene.

Apart from all the above mentioned places, there are some places which are of interest. Here there is sanskrit college where you can find many books of ancient times. This is one of the biggest collection in the state and this is heaven for those who are interested in ancient literature. There is wild life sanctuary which we couldn't get time to explore. I don't have enough information about accommodation. But beside Sankrit college, there is possible mess which we want to explore next time.

Here are some of the videos on Melukote.
