Beluru - Art has no limit

Is there any moment which makes you more happy at the cost of your trekking ? Yes that moment was our friend Guru's marriage. We knew that he will not be coming for further treks but we were happy to see him in new avatar. In other words we were happy seeing him falling in well much before us.

His marriage was there in Belur, a historical place. I and Vineet went for his marriage in KSRTC volvo bus.We thought of visiting halebedu also. But since we didn't have much time, we could see only Belur. I have visited this place long back.

Belur Chennakeshava temple is the architectural beauty. The best time to visit is evening, But we were little early and couldn't capture the majestic view of temple in evening.

The big tower on the entrance of the temple welcomes you. The temple is an fine example of  hoyasala architecture which took 103 years to complete. Temple is built in the memory of Hoysala's victory over Cholas.

If you look at the temple, the structure itself is so unique. The hoysala architecture generally will have a platform above  1 meter which is called as jagati.

From outside, temple is having more corners and are built in zig-zag fashion. Hoysala architecture has been a curious subject for many researchers and even for foreigners.

Look at the carvings, you find the mythological characters carved in layers

If you closely look at the sculptures, you can find most of them are related to Vishnu avatars. The temple is built with soap stone and is designed by Dasoja and his son Chavana. The temple was damaged by Tughalk commander but been given a reshape to some sculptures by Vijayanagara empire. Hoysalas were so strong that they were the only Hindu empire who resisted the Muslim invaders.

As you try to enter the temple, on the either side of the door, you can find the statue of Sala who saved his teacher from lion. The Hoysala term means "Strike Sala". This statue is also emblem of hoysala dynasty .

Though you can not take the photo of Lord Channakeshwa, you can take the photos of remaining sculptures.

The mantapa design is unique in the Hoysala style. Even the pillars will have artistic design in layers.

Then there is Kappe Chennigaraya temple and Veer Narayana temple.

There is lot of folk stories on the history behind Kappe Chennigaraya temple. Jakanachari has built the temple. According to folk lore his son found a mistake in the stone he is using and he cut his hand because of the flaws. A frog came out of the stone when he dried the stone with sandalwood.

Veer Narayana temple have some beautiful carvings also.  The below picture shows the beauty of those large images.

Then there is beautiful pond which is called as Vishnu samudra.

Belur is proposed as UNESCO heritage centre along with Halebedu and Shravanabelagola in this region. Even today we remember Hoysalas for their love for art , literature. We have a responsibility to save this heritage centre for the future. And here I am signing of with a beautiful saying

"The world is a book. Those who do not travel read only one page of the book."
